Snitterfield in 1954

I lived at Hatton Bank Farm in 1954, when my father Harry Rose was foreman for the owner Clyde Higgs who owned several farms in the area, including Black Hill and Hatton Rock, and supplied milk to most of Stratford and surrounding area. He was extremely wealthy and visited his farms in a chauffeur driven Rolls Royce. I went to school in Snitterfield, and am writing a book about my father. I visited Hatton Bank Farm a few years ago and was dismayed o find that the beautiful Queen Anne farmhouse with six bedrooms, cellars, a music room and an acre of gardens had been demolished and some kind of hideous modern barn put in it's place. I have a fund of hilarious (and sad) stories about the farm, our time in Warwickshire forms just one chapter of the book. I wondered if you have a historical society in the village, and if what I have written could be of interest to them. Does any one, aged 65 or over, remember Hatton Bank Farm, the Rose family, Carol Rose, Clyde Higgs, or might my name ap... read more

I am very angry that residents chose to have garden fires in the middle of the day when the sun is shining gloriously, and people have their washing out and also means that i cant have my windows open on a hot day like this...i have had to get all my washing off the line too..why cant people be more considerate when having fires, when we have a fire we wait till early evening when their is no washing out..i will be contacting stratford council about this, as surely there must be conditions about having garden fires.

Wellesbourne Airfield

I live in Wellesbourne and believe it is blighted by the excessive
airfield noise. The airfield operators do not live in Wellesbourne and
do not care about the locals

I hope motorised gliders do not come to Snitterfield but I believe they
will.

Why is it that some dog owners feel that they can leave their dogs poo on the pavement
for others to walk through, do they not notice that it has happened, do they have no
respect for their surroundings!!!

Record research

Hi,
Does anyone know of a band called Tennessee stud who released a LP called Making Money for Music, on the back cover it credits The Barstaff at The Snitterfield Arms. The band members are as far as I can gather Bob Pate, Chas Bartlett, Dave Thatcher and Kerry Wilcox. I can find no info' regarding this group at all and as a record collector I find this really annoying.
The record was recorded at Tank Records, Kings lane, Nr.Snitterton, hopefully if they played regularly at the public house someone may remember them or even know of a band member.
Anyone can contact me at dean.hardy@yahoo.co.uk with any information they may have.
Thank you in anticipation,
Regards,
Dean.

Does anyone remember the buildings and houses on Blackhill between about 1950 and 1980? When did the garage get built and what was there before it?

Snitterfield Brass Band

I have two photos of what is presumably the Snitterfield Brass Band taken 1888 or earlier. They were brought to Australia in 1888 by my grandfather, 16 year old John Thomas Tansey. I know he was a member of the band in 1887 and I think he is one of the younger musicians in these photos.
I would like to make e-mail contact with any of your local historians. I know in the past the Women's Institute was very knowledgeable about their village history; or perhaps some of the older members of your community might still have similar photos which were handed down to them. Any help or suggestions would be welcome.
I can be contacted at btur@tpgi.com.au

Hello from NZ

My wife's ancestors, the CHATTERLEYs, lived in Snitterfield for many years in the 19th C.

We are visiting the UK next month and are hoping that we can get to Snitterfield to see if we can find any remnant of them.

Is anyone able to help with any information please? They were hurdle makers.

Thanks

Mike

I have lost my flat cap on a walk in the village. I'm not exactly sure where but I went through Brookside to Glebe Lake and then up to the church and back down Bell Lane. It is checed with a dragonfly pin in it. It was a birthday present and I would love it back.
Please call my Mum on 01789 731348 if you find it.
Thank you

Snipe Energy Saving Feature

I was a bit surprised to see the payback figures quoted for some of the hot water systems described in Snipe. I've seen figures bandied around for typical water heating costs for a family of four as being around £100 - £150 per year in respectable newspapers. There would seem to be quite a conflict between these figures and the savings described in Snipe. Using these figures some of the systems would be having paypacks of 50-80 years - and many of these systems won't last that long.
Can anyone explain this discrepancy.

I am hoping to run a Bygone Snitterfield event along the lines of those run in Bearley over the last 3 years. To make it a success I would like to borrow (very briefly) any pictures, film etc you may have of the village, however old or new, to turn into an audio visual presentation and DVD.

Have you got any? - would you like to help?

Tracing Bolton family tree

Hi all, I've been doing some investigation into my family's history and I found out from the 1901 census that my great, great grandfather was born in Snitterfield in around 1833. His name was William H Bolton. He married a woman called Harriet - also from Snitterfield and also born in approximately 1833. I don't know her family name.

By 1901 he had moved to Droitwich in Worcestershire and was listed as being a Dairyman and Farrier.

If anyone has any information about the Bolton family in Snitterfield I'd be much obliged if you could get in touch with me at willbolton |at| gmail.com

Many thanks.

Professor Brian Cox is presenting 3 great programmes, on January 3rd,
4th and 5th, introducing viewers to the magic of night skies, planets,
stars and Space.

We are collaborating with the BBC and staging a "Star Party" on an
elevated site at Snitterfield Sports Club, starting at 6.30 on January
the 7th (or the 11th if weather dictates).

One of the key objectives of the Party is to give young people the
opportunity of viewing the heavens through powerful telescopes (400X).
Astronomers will help them to understand what they look at.

Please pass on this information to relatives and friends to give them
a chance of enjoying a very interesting night out. You can pass the
word on, and keep up to date with facebook, but first get more
information from www.astro.org.uk

Under the proposals to reduce the number of MPs, The boundary commission proposes that Snitterfield will become part of the Leamington and Warwick constituency, not Stratford upon Avon. Links provided for information.

Hello!

I do some work for a local gift company called Find Me a Gift and we have raised a Government Petition (see link below) to convert agricultural tractors into snow ploughs in winter to help keep the roads moving. I think we can all remember last year's problems! Please sign the petition if you want to make a difference. Stirling Council have already put up funding to put it in place, let's see if we can do the same here!
