Well, in spite of the vagaries of the weather, we ground out a home win. Clive and Nello pulled through after a dodgy three setter in the first pairings with the weather deteriorating fast and then slaughtering the second pair in straight love sets. Chocie and the Shopkeeper won a convincing straight sets win against the second pairing; but with the time interval/break in play, they entered the field of battle for the onslaught versus the visitor's first pair. Holding 3-3 in the first set it eventually went away from them although a fightback looked on the cards in the second set at 0-5, 1-5, 2-5, only for the steam, energy and will to win gone they succombed.

Would like to say that Lee played magnificently in the first match and reassured the aging chocie that we could get a result after all. Well done Lee and thanks to Gaye for bribing you to play, sorry encouraging you to play. Thanks a million. In reward terms, Chocie will now swing a bat in Botham style 2009 for the Snipes. I might need a runner betewen the stumps though!!!!

Chocie is feeling his age and has pretty well made is mind up that it is time to call it a day for tennis organisation and serious play. Sad that this reflection comes on a day playing of all teams.... Inkberrow, who are a team that chocie and his stalwart partner of yesteryear, Ken the White Fox, came back from 5-1 down in the third set to tie-break it and eventually win it thus ensuring our divisional position was secure. Skipper Richard and Steve Righton came off their seats to shake our hands so vigorously at the achievement. Memories are many and now the aches and pains are there too.....time to retire and let a younger man take the reins. Chocie will always be on hand to help of course.....Battle on to the Death, his call sign.

Next week is our last for 2008/9 and is a final home match versus Ilmington, who we drew with away. I think a 0-4 reversal is on the cards, but who knows........our team of Nello, Clive and Nick with Chocie might just spring a surprise or two. Let's go for it lads, one last throw of the dice.

Thanks to all the players that have made my life easier by saying yes to playing; and wish you were here to those that have not. I am aware that other commitments and time constraints are of consideration, but if we are in a league, we need a squad that can and is willing to play.

Au revoir

I Chocie, I understand how you feel, the aches and pains don't go away, they linger with you for days and as soon as you feel better, the next match comes up to inflict you more pain.

Good win on Sunday, told Clive we should have finished the first match in two sets, we would have missed the worst of the weather, instead we had to battle through wind and rain, serving against the wind wasn't much fun either, the opposition was standing one meter inside the service box, I wouldn't have been too happy if we had lost it.
I don't know what Lee was thinking, he turned up in tshirt and shorts, must have listened to the wrong weather forcast, nevertheless he did support you well.

A big thank you for the commitment and dedication you have shown in organizing the teams and providing refreshments.

See you next Sunday, no excuses as you have a week to recover, mind you I have noticed a gradual deterioration in your form since you married Edith.

Keep on chopping! Forza i vecchi!
