The
first meeting of the WI in Snitterfield was held in
the village hall on 24th May 1933. 36 members attended,
the first president was Mrs Hawkesworth and the members
paid 1d for their cup of tea after the meeting. The
topics discussed at the time reflected the needs of
the women in the community so dress making, fruit
bottling, poultry keeping and home nursing were featured.
During World War 2 our WI ladies had a jam making
centre, a war sewing group and collected money for
the Red Cross.
Drama also became a permanent part for the Snitterfield
members and in 1936 our WI came 2nd by 1 mark to Kineton
in the Warwickshire competition. Curtains for the
hall were purchased from the proceeds of many dramatic
productions.
The present WI is still involved with crafts and there
is still a demand for our cakes and jams as demonstrated
this year at the fete. Topics now discussed reflect
both the busy lives of women and the increase in leisure
activities.
We welcome women of all ages however the tea now is
50p but does include cake.
Beyond our local meeting there is a wealth of activities
organised by the county federation based in Warwick
which offers literature craft and social activities
in line with the original aims of the WI.
