The
first meeting of the Women's Institute in Snitterfield was held in
the village hall on 24th May 1933. 36 members attended and the first
President was a Mrs Hawksworth and the members paid 1d for their cup
of tea after the meeting.
The
topics discussed, at that time, reflected the needs of the women in
the community and so dressmaking, fruit boiling, poultry keeping and
home nursing were featured. During WWII our WI ladies had a jam making
centre, a war-savings group and collected money for the Red Cross.
Drama also played a prominent part for the Snitterfield members and
in 1936 our WI came second. by one mark, to Kineton, in the Warwickshire
competition. Stage curtains for the hall were purchased with the proceeds
from many dramatic productions.
Much has changed over the years but our membership remains much the
same. Nowadays, although we have a much larger community, women are
often occupied with work and other leisure pursuits.
In our WI, jam making has made way for computers and travel has put
an end to poultry keeping. But, we still support our village, we still
give to overseas projects and we still welcome all women of any age.
However, tea is now 40p-but does include cake!
