On a very cold and windy December evening, we push open the doors to the village hall to be welcomed by a blast of warm air and a riot of Christmas colour. On entering we are handed a glass of something seasonal and, then, turn to be greeted by fellow members. So starts our Christmas meeting as always and then we sit down to a lovely meal prepared by John and his team from the Sports club. Stuffed Turkey breast and all the trimmings followed by Christmas pudding. After which, feeling very replete, we sit back to wait for the entertainment. This year Judith Walker, our President, had brought along her singing group. "Sweet Memories", a group of 8 ladies ,all wearing forties costumes, accompanied by one of their number on the digital piano. Each one looked very authentic in a replica costume from that era. One lady had copied her pretty dress from a Chanel original, another had made hers from "Blackout curtains", and yet another was wearing an original hat. All these costumes were in a colour scheme of black, white and red. They then sang songs from the second world war, which some of us remembered very well ,and we joined in the singing with gusto! "The White Cliffs of Dover", "Run Rabbit Run", "Apple Blossom Time", "The Seigfried Line", and "Lilly Marlene". This latter number, sang by one of the girls dressed in a black raincoat and berret, in the voice of Marlene Deitricht. They ended with "White Christmas" and then we all sang Jerusalem. A very enjoyable evening bringing to an end a very successful WI year. After which we had to wrap up warm and face the cold outside, but with a very warm glow inside us.

The next meeting will be January 11th 2012
